I’ve been busy making artworks for my upcoming exhibition, Memory Birds and Cuckoo Trees at Kingston Arts Centre. It’s a mix of older work that has been expanded and updated for this exhibition, and completely new work. The pictures in this exhibition are a little tribute to some of the artists and authors who have stopped by and decided to stay in my head, inspiring what I do – artists and authors including Joan Aiken (whose work inspired the title of the exhibition) and Henri Rousseau whose dreamlike artwork forever intrigues me, but also Angela Carter, Goya, Hergé, Leonora Carrington, Jan Pieńkowski, Bill Traylor and others.
The art has now been submitted to be printed by the wonderful staff of Kingston City Council, so I’ll be updating my website to facilitate print sales as soon as possible.
While I get things sorted, there are a few things you can do to keep abreast of developments:
1. Please check back soon!
2. Sign up to my blog/newsletter here to be notified when things are ready to go.
3. A paper form to order a print will be uploaded in the next few days! You can print it, fill it in and email it back to me at Judywatsonart-at-gmail-dot-com.
Archival Quality Digital Fine Art Prints (Giclees)
What are giclee prints? How are they different from what I print out of my home inkjet printer?
Yes! I do make paintings with acrylic paint, and collages with paper and glue. I love it! I’m looking forward to getting back to the easel over the summer. But the artworks in this exhibition are collaged together digitally, using PhotoShop. They take many, many hours to create. They’re manually assembled from drawings, paintings, hand-printed elements and found materials, and I use tools, brushes and filters in PhotoShop as well. (I never, ever use generative AI in any aspect of my work.)
Once assembled, the artworks do not exist in any physical form until they are printed. (Or they can be viewed on-screen.) I want my art to be accessible to people who love it, and not everyone can afford a large print. So I’m making small, affordable open edition prints, as well as signed, limited edition large prints that show off the artwork at its intended size. All prints will come with a certificate of authenticity and will be sumptuously printed using giclee technology.
Giclee prints employ at least ten archival quality pigment based inks rather than the four dye based inks on your home printer. They’re printed onto thick, archival quality acid free paper that holds vivid colour and resists fading for 100+ years when treated with care. My prints will be printed at Southern Buoy, a company supporting local artists in the Mornington area, local to me. You can check out the specs on their page, but I’ve included them here for your convenience.
